 Stuart Stanley SGFA                      Biography

Stuart studied at both Eastbourne and Wimbledon Schools of Art, specialising in theatre design but always taking an interest in fine art.

After leaving Art School he worked as a Theatre Designer for twenty years in repertory companies including the Thorndike Theatre Leatherhead where he was head of design for over ten years.
Stuart also worked as a freelance designer in Belfast, Hong Kong and throughout the UK including the West End.

Having left the theatre in 1986 Stuart took up his first love of painting and drawing as well as working as an Events Designer. Projects included major productions in the Palace of Versailles,
The Ritz and Opera Comique in Paris and the Hoffburg Palace Vienna.

Since 1998 Stuart has concentrated more and more on Fine Art and has held many one-man and group exhibitions throughout England, Scotland and Italy.

Stuart is pleased to be a member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art and won the award for Best Picture in the Exhibition at their 2012 annual show in London

Stuart was awarded the prestigious and coveted title Baines Surrey Artist of the Year 2011-2012 after a final selection exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham in September 2011. He then went on to hold a solo exhibition at the gallery in 2012

Stuart Stanley SGFA                               Artist Statement

Stuart works mainly in oil and acrylic and his work has developed over the years into an expressive, painterly style using vibrant colours and masterly brush marks. The strong influence of his theatre background can be seen in his dramatic paintings, which are full of light, colour, energy and atmosphere. The foundation of his paintings is provided by his love of drawing and sketching in pencil and charcoal and his understanding of artistic practice and the history of art.
